Enjay Tiguin is an Linux based OS available in two variants – Enjay Tiguin Desktop – for individual desktops, and Enjay Tiguin app Server, which can be used as Terminal Server, Here are few tips for Migrating to Linux.

Before arriving to a decision to Migrate your IT infrastructure to Enjay Tiguin OS (or any other Linux OS), you need to consider following points. (Please note that these points may be also be used to make up your mind whether you should migrate or not? )

  • What is cost of compliance for you (the Licensing cost)

    • Get a consultant and get this done, knowing your exact liability for plan B helps a lot.
    • In case of software licensing, things can be quite complicated, so better have a consultant for it.
    • Your IT Vendor might be able to help you. (else call Enjay for more help)
  • What is cost of Migration and maintaining it.

    • Now consider the cost of Migration i.e. using Linux OS + Apps.
    • Include all other expenses also, as you might have to incur little extra on Training, customization, Support or even consultancy charges.
    • Also consider Loss of Man hours due to all above.
  • Your Return on Investment on doing it.

    • Now you should be able to calculate the Returns on Investment that you can get with the help of this.
    • Consider hidden costs in both the options also.
    • There will be few intangible (or indirect advantages e.g.: Promoting Open source benefits society much more than buying proprietary software), consider that also.
  • There will be teething troubles.

    • Be ready for teething troubles, you and your team may have been on the Windows platform for years (may be decades even). So,  you will have to allow a comparable time for adaptability to Linux.
    • These are generally resistance to change, but they will come and go.
  • Linux is not FREE (of cost)

    • As already explained above, there will be costs for training, customisation, support or even consultancy.
    • But all of these are way less than paying for licensed software.
  • There will be resistance from your Users.

    • People don’t like changes, this stands true for your users as well.
    • There can be obstacles from the user community, which will have to be dealt with proper motivation, training and Management Policy.
  • 100% Migration might not be possible.

    • Don’t expect to be able to migrate 100% from MS Platform to Linux Platform, that might not be possible (or at least practical)
